February 2019

Congratulations to project researcher Sofia Ribeiro from Medtronic – Sofradim Production and National University of Ireland, Galway on her recent Best PhD Project Award for the paper entitled: Design and Characterization of Synthetic Biodegradable films for soft Tissue Engineering. This award was received at the Doctoral Consortium on Biomedical Engineering Systems and Technologies (DCBIOSTEC/BIOSTEC) held in Prague, Czech Republic on the 24th February 2019.

January 2019

Congratulations to project researcher Steven Vermeulen from Maastricht University on his recent research paper publication in Acta Biomaterialia.  The publication, co-authored by researchers from Maastricht University and the National University of Ireland, Galway, identifies optimal topographies for in vitro culture of tenocytes.  The topographies support maintenance of tenocyte phenotype in culture, addressing the problem of phenotypic drift which has been a persistent problem in tendon tissue engineering.  This was a major objective and deliverable for our ITN project.  Steven’s paper was recently highlighted on the website Materials Today:

Kick-off Meeting

The Kick-off Meeting was held at the National University of Ireland Galway, on the 11th and 12th February 2016. I was attended by all Principal Investigators and the two ESR recruited at that moment, Steven Vermeulen and Dimitrios Tsiapalis.

Each partner gave a brief introduction, followed by:

-Dr Ann Ryan, Head of Research, Vice President of Research Office, NUI Galway

-Prof Abhay Pandit, Director of SFI Center for Research in Medical Devices (CURAM°, NUI Galway

Later the following topics were discussed: “Management, Implementation, Training” and “IP, Dissemination, Outreach”.
